After the Invasion – Scene 10 : The Decryption

Lex emailed his forensic data expert, asking for him to drop by for a consultation.

He began rummaging through the paperwork detailing the charges and the evidence.

It just didn’t make any sense. There was absolutely no evidence that Tiva had any knowledge of Limen’s situation. This case was going to be a slam dunk.

Lex began to doze off over the mountains of paperwork.

***Ding! Ding!***

Lex started awake. “Come in!”

A slender figure carrying a laptop at his side creaked open the door.

“What’s up Lex? Whaddaya need?

“Hey Perfid, I’ve got another political case here, it looks like. Nothing in her background suggests she might have made herself a target, so all I’ve got to go on is this drive. But it’s encrypted. You think you can help me out here?”

“Let me take a look.” Perfid popped down, messed with his laptop a bit, and popped the storage drive into the usb port.

Perfid typed a few things, clicked the mouse, and a quizzical look washed over his face. “Crap. This is 4096 RSA encrypted. I’m going to need some time on a quantum computer. I’ll make a copy and take it with me to my lab. It’s probably not safe to do this virtually. I’ll call you back in a couple hours?”

Lex responded, “Sure thing. Let me know as soon as possible.”

******

*Ring, ring*

Lex tapped the answer button and put the phone up to his face. A panicked voice warbled at him through the speaker.

“Shit. This is big. This is too big for me. Count me out man. I’m putting the key up on 4chan. You can check it out if you like, but let me just tell you you don’t want any of this heat on you. I’m throwing away this phone. I’ll call you when it’s safe.”

Lex contemplated as he twirled the storage drive in his fingers.
