After the Invasion – Scene 11 : The Escape

Perfid typed out the string of numbers and uploaded it.

He scrubbed the data from his drives, popped them out, and smashed them to pieces with a hammer.

He grabbed a backup drive he had imaged before meeting with Lex and slid it into his laptop, hitting his panic button and sprinting out the door.

Perfid made his home in the warehouse district, away from the prying eyes and universal surveillance of the modern housing across the city. People would always bug him about it being less safe and that he was more likely to encounter them, but now what he’d always suspected was true. What he didn’t know is how dangerous this knowledge would be.

He tucked his laptop into his knapsack as he smelled the server drives melting themselves behind him. As he sprinted down the street, around corners and down back alleys, he saw a brilliant flash of whitest light behind him.

Was it them? He sprinted up a fire escape to get a view, and before him stood four white figures, arms outstretched on each side the building, glowing brighter than the sun. Soon the light dimmed, revealing an empty lot where his building had been.

“Sure was lucky to get out when I did,” Perfid thought.

Then he saw the four figures slowly turn their heads toward him.
