After the Invasion – Scene 13 : The Discovery

Lex took long, purposeful strides, heading in to the jail to meet once more with Tiva. The state was likely to drop charges soon, and Tiva seemed like she needed cheering up.

But first he was hungry. He tapped is foot impatiently as he waited, keeping safe distance from the customer in front of him. He didn’t have time for this.

Just as his eyes were ready to roll out of his head he heard from the vendor, “You gonna order?”

Lex efficiently moved through the process, inhaling the hotdog as he approached the building, pulling out his ID as he lowered his shoulder into the door of the jail building.

Lex approached the desk, sliding his ID across the desk. “I’m here to see a prisoner at 9:30 am. I have an appointment.”

Across the desk a vacant pair of eyes typed something into the computer.

“I don’t see you in our system, sir. Are you sure you have the correct building?”

“Yes. I was here yesterday. We literally had a conversation yesterday when I made the appointment with you.”

A rare flash of recognition crossed the eyes across the counter. “Oh! Lex! Right! Give me a sec.”

More typing.

“Alright. So, did the judge not tell you? It looks like you set it up. The charges were dropped yesterday at… 7pm, and the advice was to release the prisoner immediately?”

It was surprising that no one could see the smoke billowing out of Lex’s ears. “No. No one informed or consulted me about this.”

Lex realized something. “Wait, did you say 7pm? What are you insane? That’s after curfew! You want her to end up dead?”

He grabbed his phone and dialed. No answer. “Shit. Of course you know there will be litigation.”

Lex jogged out the door and toward his car. There could be big trouble brewing.
